Vacations Travel By Car

Vacations Travel By Car

By: http://www.northamericabase.com

With vacation season in full force, you may be planning a getaway of your own. Once you've figured out where you're going, you have to decide on how to get there. Some places require traveling by air; it's the only way to get there, so the decision is an easy one. If it's a location to which you can drive, however, you're faced with a choice: should you drive, or should you fly?

Everyone has preferences for modes of travel, of course. For many, flight is the preferred option. From a certain perspective, it makes perfect sense—you spend less time getting there so you can spend more time being there.

Traveling by car takes time. It won’t have you kicking back on the beach or relaxing in the mountains ASAP There are stops for fuel, stops for bathroom breaks, stops to eat or stretch your legs. There's the potential of getting lost, of taking the wrong turn and having to repeatedly peruse a road atlas to find your way—of having to backtrack, grumbling all the while because you've gone twenty miles out of your way.

On a road trip, there are fuel expenses. There is wear and tear on the car, and the ever-dreaded possibility that it may break down and need repairs along the way. If you're traveling with others, a drive can entail close contact with those people for extended periods of time. Whether you're alone or have company, it will definitely entail being largely confined to a small space for the duration of the drive.

Given all this, you may ask: why would anyone choose to drive? Why would anybody embarking on a vacation opt to spend one or more days driving, when it would be so much easier, quicker, and more convenient to just book a flight?

The fact is, there's something special about taking a long trip by car. It has nothing to do with efficiency, or getting to where you’re going as quickly as possible. It has to do with viewing your vacation as an adventure, a journey—and appreciating the whole journey, including the process of getting there.

When you travel by airplane, you step into a metal compartment. Within an hour or two, presto! You simply step back out in a different place, usually none the worse for wear and in the same state of mind, more or less, as when you stepped on. For all intents and purposes, you might as well have been transported between places, much like in the old science fiction movies or television shows.

By contrast, when you travel by car, there's a sense of having moved through space, of having gone somewhere. Sure, there was a starting point and an ending point, just as in air travel—but there's a keen awareness of having traversed the miles. You were there for every one of them.

All those places you might have peered at from your window seat in an airplane? You were there. You saw the roll of the land, and the shadows cast on them by the sun. They weren't just crosshatched impressions of fields and cities, unimaginably distant. They were fields and cities: up-close, personal, and real.

For some people, the old adage, "It's not about the destination, but about the journey" still rings true. If you're one of these people—and you happen to be planning a vacation—driving is still the only way to go.

Everything You Need to Know About the Bahrain International Airport

Everything You Need to Know About the Bahrain International Airport
http://northamericabase.com

When many Americans travel overseas, they go to popular vacation destinations. Many of those destinations include Paris, Tokyo, and London. As nice as these places are to visit, there are many other areas of the world that are popular to vacation at. One of those areas includes the Middle East. If you are interested in visiting Bahrain, namely the Manama area, you will find beautiful resorts, amazing shopping centers, and just about anything else that you are looking for. If you make the decision to visit that area of the Middle East, you will likely fly into the Bahrain International Airport.

The Bahrain International Airport is serviced by over thirty different airlines. Some of those airlines include British Airways, Egypt Air, Gulf Air, and Mahan Air. Unfortunately, you will find that it is almost impossible to get a flight from the United States to this popular Middle East airport. That does not mean that you will not be able to visit the area, it just means that you will have to find a connecting flight at another international airport. Since you will still be arriving and maybe even taking off from the Bahrain International Airport it is advised that you familiarize yourself with the airport and everything that it has to offer.

When traveling to another country, you will need to exchange your money for currencies that are accepted. As soon as you arrive at the Bahrain International Airport, you should be able to do this. There are numerous money exchange centers, as well as full service banks, and ATM machines. All of these financial establishments or machines are scattered throughout the airport; therefore, whether you are coming or going, you should be able to exchange money or withdraw money from your account.

Although the air travel rules for Bahrain International Airport are difficult to find and learn about, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they do not exist. As with air travel in most other countries, you will find that you are prohibited from bring dangerous and explosive materials aboard an airplane. You will also need to take into account the country in which you are coming from or going to. For example, like the United States, the United Kingdom also has a carryon ban on all liquids. This means that if you are coming to Bahrain International Airport from there, you will likely be prohibited from bring a beverage onboard, as well as other liquid beauty supplies or large amounts of liquid medication.

The Bahrain International Airport is well known for the services and features that it provides travelers with, many of which were mentioned above, but there one thing that the Bahrain International Airport offers that is unique, especially when compared to other international airports. That feature is premium check-in. Premium check in is available to all premium class passengers, which is sort of like being a first class passenger in the United States. Premium class passengers are checked in a peaceful space that is away from the rest of the airport. If you are able to afford a premium class ticket, you are advised to do so; the experience is one that you will likely never forget.

If you would like more information on the Bahrain International Airport, as well as free online travel brochures, you are advised to visit www.bahrainairport.com. That is the official online website, readable in English, for the Bahrain International Airport.

Important Facts You Will Need For Your Mauritius Vacation

Important Facts You Will Need For Your Mauritius Vacation
By: http://northamericabase.com/
When you are planning a vacation, having all of the important facts in hand well in advance will help to ensure that your trip will be as pleasant and problem-free as possible.

For American travellers who plan to vacation on Mauritius, one important factor that will be handy to know about in advance is that the metric system is used for weights and measurements on the island. As this is something which many Americans are not overly familiar with, it would be a good idea to either brush up on skills or carry a metric converter, such as a small booklet which contains this information. It may seem like a very minor issue, but when you are on your trip you will see how frequently it will come in handy for everything from asking the distance in directions to purchasing food items while shopping.

If you are wondering if there may be a language barrier, it is not likely that you will have a problem with this. Although most of the residents of Mauritius speak the dialect known as Creole, and basic French is also often used, the official language of the island is English, and many people are fluent in English regardless of which language they prefer to use in their everyday lives.

As a first-time traveller to Mauritius, it will also be necessary for you to know that the island's monetary unit is the Mauritian Rupee. One dollar is equivalent to thirty rupees. If you wish to have the assistance of a currency converter, they are readily available and will be quite convenient for you. Credit cards are acceptable; and ATM machines are also available in many locations for your convenience.

In order to be welcomed to Mauritius, you will need a valid passport, proof of funds necessary for your stay, adequate traveller's insurance, and your travel ticket stating that you have your return destination. You will not be required to have extra immunizations in order to visit Mauritius.

While driving on the island is done on the left-hand side of the road, you will be allowed to drive if you possess a valid driver's license and abide by the island's driving laws. Renting a car will not be difficult at all if you have your personal documentation.

As long as you take proper common-sense precautions, such as not carrying large amounts of cash and not walking alone at night, you will not have much to worry about in terms of your basic safety.

Even though the island of Mauritius may be radically different from the lifestyle of your home location, all it really takes is exercising an average degree of sensiblity in order to have a good, safe vacation. After you have the basic important information that you will need for your trip so that communication, entrance requirements, and other issues are well prepared for, all that will be left for you to do is plan the nicest trip that you have ever taken, and then have a great time!

Canada Vocation Travel

Canada Vocation Travel
By: http://northamericabase.com/
If you live in the United States, you may neglect to think of our neighbor to the North when you are thinking about getting away from it all for a holiday. Though you may not want to go to Canada when you want a warm vacation on the beach in the middle of winter, there are plenty of great reasons why you should consider Canada holidays when you want to go out of the country. You can always get there so much easier than flying over the ocean, and you will still be leaving your home country to explore a new one. Some things will be familiar, and others will be different.

There are many that take Canada holidays for the reasons of both fishing and hunting. Canada has some amazing wildlife, and many great areas where you can see things you can not see at home. You can hunt moose there, which is not really something you can do in the States. You can also go just to view their wildlife and go through their forests for an experience that you may not soon forget. They also have great fishing in almost all areas of the country, so don’t forget to consider Canada holidays when fishing is your thing.

Some of my earlier memories of life are of Canada holidays, and I wish we still did them. I found Canada to be a lot like home, but I still felt like we had gone a long way away and that I was in some magical land that was not like home. In reality, it was a lot like home, but with many different and interesting things to see and do. I don’t remember a lot about the Canada holidays now because I was so young, but I do remember enough to make me want to go back and take my family with me some time.

You can find no shortage of great Canada holidays from which to choose if you look around online or ask your travel agent. No matter what it is that you might like to do, you can usually find it in Canada. If you have a particular place in mind, you can find some great travel packages that make it easy for you to plan your vacation and then have a great time while you are there. From country to city, Canada is a world away, but almost right in your own backyard.

Advice for Tourists Who Want to Travel Central America

Advice for Tourists Who Want to Travel Central America
http://northamericabase.com/

After talking to many people over the years both in the U.S. and abroad, there seem to be many misunderstandings when it comes time to travel Central America. Most people are familiar with Costa Rica and Panama, though many will erroneously say South America when referring to the location on the map of these countries. The other countries that are not so well known such as Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Belize all have their own wonderful mysteries and alluring destinations to be discovered and the wise traveler looking for an adventure that is affordable and off the beaten path should consider these countries.

There are several important things one should take note of before they travel Central America. People in general will realize before they travel that these countries are near the equator and so are hot year round, but until they actually get off the air-conditioned plane do they realize just how hot and humid these countries can get. People with extreme asthma or other medical problems should consult with their doctors first before they travel Central America.

If your travel takes you to a remote jungle or beach front area that are prevalent in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize and Panama then you need to be mindful of insects and other nasty creatures such as large spiders and especially scorpions. The native scorpion of the region is small and brownish red. This animal will hide in clothing and fall from ceilings and their sting is painful but not lethal. Some swelling may occur and partial paralysis or numbness for a temporary period of time. Tourists are warned to shake out their clothing and shoes before putting them on since this is where these critters like to hide. Pack some Benadryl and take one if bitten and the effects of the sting will most likely go away much quicker, unless one is allergic to the sting and then you need to seek medical help immediately.

There are also snakes that you need to be aware of, though they are more rare than one would think. In Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, residents would complain of deadly coral snakes coming into their homes for a bit of shade. In Costa Rica, many beach front resorts were plagued by one of the most aggressive serpents, the Ferre de Lance, or Terciopelos as the natives call them. One bite from one of these reptiles and it could be all over if medical help is not reached fairly quickly.

When bathing in the waters off the coast you need to be mindful of riptides. There is an area in northern Nicaragua called Poneloya where the waves are so fierce and the riptides so abundant that each Holy Week several hundred people get sucked in and are never seen again. If you are drinking, old or very young, you need to avoid these types of turbulent waters when you travel Central America.

When people swim in the ocean they can be lulled into a false sense of security, especially if they swim every day. They forget that the ocean is teeming with life and not all of it friendly. There are sharks, of course, and other nasty fish like barracuda, but attacks from these animals are rare. More likely is getting stung by jellyfish which will invade certain areas at different times of the year. You need to get good information from other swimmers before venturing out into the ocean.

These are just a few tips to consider when you travel Central America. Use your common sense and ask lots of questions before embarking and you will be alright and have a great time on your vacation.

The Ultimate Hotel Guide To New York City

The Ultimate Hotel Guide To New York City
http://www.northamericabase.com/
New York City is the city that never sleeps, es verdad? Well, it’s certainly no wonder with so many places and stuff that would please all the senses. There’s the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Madison Square Garden and God knows what else. But the question is...where do you stay in New York City?

Admittedly, the cost of living, especially rent expenses, is still rocketing sky high in New York City. If you know where to look, a lot of restaurants offer affordable yet tasty dishes so food’s no problem. When it comes to shopping, don’t think that New York City is just all about Macy’s. Of course not! There are a lot of bazaars that are ongoing throughout New York City and all you need is an efficient guide to help you out. For tourist spots, you shouldn’t believe either that everything in New York City comes with a ticket price. Nuh-uh! In fact, just walking in downtown New York is already a sight to behold.

So the only problem is, yes, where to stay?

Before I launch on a list of New York City hotels that could interest you, first, I have to warn you that what’s termed as “affordable” in New York City may not be “affordable” in your vocabulary. So if you’re cash strapped, better check first if you’ve got some friends living in New York City who’d lend you a room for a week or two as you go sight-seeing.

New York is a city of high rise towers and a number of those are hotels that you can take your pick of. These buildings range from the five star hotels to the funky ones to hotels with “affordable” packages.

Four Season Hotel : if you’ve got kids, then you should consider staying in this kid-friendly hotel because guests under 18 can stay for free. The tallest hotel in New York City, it also provides its family guests with coloring books, a video lending library and welcome gifts for kids.

Soho Grand Hotel : if you’re the type of traveler who can’t bear to leave your behind, have no fear because there are several hotels in New York that can accommodate furry guests, just like the Soho Grand Hotel. Upon checkout, you’ll even be given a goldfish to remember your New York holiday.

Affinia 50 Suites : this particular hotel has no difficulties in landing a Top 10 spot in any survey when it comes to being the best hotel in New York City. Previously known as the Plaza 50 Suites, this is a no-fuss-comfort-zone for travelers who want basic accommodations that would also be easy on the pockets. Large suites equipped with kitchenettes are also available if you so prefer.
Hilton Time Square : Never mind Paris Hilton and her notorious antics. At least her family still hasn’t stopped in being one of the best when you’re talking about hotel services. The Hilton Time Square is one of the poshest hotels in New York City, with a twenty-five-seater theater and even its own wax museum! And just because it’s posh, don’t assume that the staff would turn its nose up on noisy, bratty kids or dirty, scrambling house pets. Nuh-uh! The Hilton Time Square aims to please all forms of guests, human and non human, adult and kids.

So now, all you need to do is choose which hotel you’re going to stay, pay the bill, enjoy the scenery and of course, tour New York City!

Canadian Immigration And Health Insurance

Canadian Immigration And Health Insurance
By: http://northamericabase.com/

My purpose is to discuss the important information that you'll need to know if you are thinking about or planning on moving to Canada as a permanent resident.

In this article, we're going to talk about some of the first things you need to do when you arrive in Canada as a permanent resident.

Health Insurance Card

One of the first things you'll want to do after arriving is apply for health insurance cards for every member of your family. Applications are available in many places, including doctor's offices and pharmacies. These cards allow you to receive care through the Canadian health insurance program for the following services:

- Examination and treatment by physicians and most specialists
- Many types of surgery
- Hospitalization
- X-rays and laboratory tests
- Immunizations

You will not have to pay for these services, these expenses are covered by the taxes that you will be paying as a working Canadian permanent resident.

In most provinces in Canada, you can begin receiving medical coverage as soon as you apply. In Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and British Columbia, however, you must wait 3-months from the date you apply for your coverage to begin. In the meantime, short-term health insurance is available through private companies.

You may also want to ask potential employers about their health coverage options as well. Many employers provide additional health insurance benefits that cover expenses, such as prescription drugs and dental care.

Social Insurance Number

Before you begin working in Canada, you need to have a Social Insurance Number (SIN). This 9-digit number is used to help you receive the social benefits you are entitled to as a Canadian permanent resident and to ensure that you are paying taxes to help support those benefits.

To apply for a SIN, you should visit a local office of the Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSD) to complete an application. You should also bring along your Permanent Resident card to proof your identity and your residency status.

The cost of application is $10, and it takes about three weeks for you to receive your card.

You can begin working before your receive your SIN card, however. You simply need to provide your employer with proof that you have applied.

Employment

In most cases, you will also want to begin searching for work almost immediately. It is possible to have a position lined up even before you apply for permanent resident status, but chances are that you'll be unemployed when you first arrive.

Depending on the type of work you are searching for, you may first need to apply for permission to engage in that profession. In Canada, some careers are classified as regulated fields. These fields included doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. In order to obtain work in these areas, you will need to contact the regulatory office in the province where you intend to work. The regulations vary from province to province.

The regulatory board will have to evaluate your experience and credentials then decide whether you need to take further steps to meet their standards.

Some trades, such as carpenter or plumber, are also considered to be regulated. Therefore, you must make sure that you have the appropriate licensing before attempting to work in those fields. Carpentry and plumbing, as well as 43 other trades, are considered Red Seal Trades. This means that the regulations for that trade are the same in all provinces. Therefore, if you are a licensed welder in Quebec, you can also do that type of work in New Brunswick without having to go through another assessment.

Fortunately, the majority of jobs in Canada are non-regulated, so you can begin searching for a position in your chosen field as soon as you arrive.

One of the best ways to find a position in Canada is to use the Job Bank service. This online site allows you to post up to 3 employee profiles that can be viewed by employers. You can also view postings placed by employers throughout Canada. The daily newspapers in all of the provinces also include job listings.

http://northamericabase.com

There are many things that can happen when you are traveling. In most cases, the most unexpected things happen when you are least prepared for it. To protect yourself while traveling, you should get a holiday travel insurance before you go on a holiday. Never take things for granted. Always remember that it is always better to be prepared than sorry. To give you a better idea about the importance of holiday insurance, here are five good reasons why you should get holiday travel

There are many things that can happen when you are traveling. In most cases, the most unexpected things happen when you are least prepared for it. To protect yourself while traveling, you should get a holiday travel insurance before you go on a holiday. Never take things for granted. Always remember that it is always better to be prepared than sorry. To give you a better idea about the importance of holiday insurance, here are five good reasons why you should get holiday travel insurance before you go on vacation.

Travel Assistance

Comprehensive holiday insurance can help you find a new flight in case your flight gets cancelled at the last minute. Note that these unexpected flight cancellations due to unavoidable circumstances can drain you financial if you do not have any holiday travel insurance. If you are traveling on a tight budget, a last minute cancellation of your connecting flight can spell a disaster for you if you do not have any insurance.

Help In Retrieving Lost Luggage

Although most airlines are very careful when it comes to loading checked-in luggage, there are times when things simply get out of hand and your luggage gets lost. Losing your luggage during your trip abroad can be very stressful but if you have holiday travel insurance, your holiday travel insurance will take care of your lost luggage so you can go on your way and have a good vacation.

Replacement Of Lost Passport And Money

Most holiday insurance policies cover loss of passport and money during travel so you need not worry if your bag along with your money and passport gets stolen while you are traveling. In cases like these, the insurance company will facilitate the issuance of a new passport and will provide you with emergency cash which you can use during your vacation.

Ticket Refunds

There are some airline companies that do refund unused tickets. In cases where the airline company refuses to refund your unused tickets, the only way to recover the cost thereof is to file a holiday insurance claim. If you did not get any travel insurance, you might as well say goodbye to that hard earned money that you used to purchase your airline ticket.

Assistance During Medical Emergencies

Although you did not plan to get sick during your vacation, there are times when your body is simply too weak to resist certain types of diseases. Without holiday insurance, you could end up spending a lot of money on hospital expenses.

Take Advantage Of Discount Airline Tickets

Take Advantage Of Discount Airline Tickets
By: http://northamericabase.com/

As most of us are no doubt familiar, there is a huge fluctuation in the prices of airline tickets. Depending on anything from season, how well traveled the route is, and other reasons that seem more mysterious, flight prices change constantly and radically. One of the most important things to consider if you're interested in discount travel is the difference in cost between domestic and international flights, and to use this to your advantage when you want to travel internationally.

In the USA, a typical return flight from New York City to Montreal, Canada, for example costs about $300 for a trip that is just over 1 hour. For roughly the same price, one can fly domestically across the country from New York to Los Angeles - a much longer trip. With very few exceptions, flights are cheaper domestically - they are subject to less taxes and regulations for the airlines, and they are often on more traveled routes so the airlines can afford a discount.

So to take advantage of this - to truly get some discount travel - you should look into splitting your long international flight into 2 flights. Although it's more indirect, and a slight inconvenience, you can save a lot of money this way. For example, if you happen to live in the northern United States and want to go to Latin or South America, you will probably find that it's a lot cheaper to first get a domestic flight to a southern hub like Miami or Dallas and then taking a second flight further south. Even if you live in a big northern city, chances are the direct flight is going to be more. Taking two flights doesn't have to be as inconvenient as you may think. Oftentimes, no overnight stay is required, and if your destination is a common one you may only have short delay.

When looking for discount travel solutions online, you're going to have to use a bit of creative thinking. Most discount flight searching sights are not set-up to search multiple flight routes to your destination. Rather, they are designed to show you the cheapest direct flight between the two points you want to go. So whenever you're comparing prices of a direct flight, it's always a good idea to take a look at an indirect path as well - oftentimes you will be surprised at the savings involved.

It is harder to easily compare different 2-flight routes, and the combinations involved can quickly make things complicated. The two general rules to keep in mind when looking for savings are that you more or less want to fly as close to your destination as possible domestically, and that you want to fly between major hubs. The cheapest of all domestic flights will always be between major hubs (as our New York to LA example shows) so if you plan your trip with that in mind it's likely you will experience significant savings.

Discount travel is as much a science as an art, and those that are good at it are able to come up with creative solutions - a great starting point for becoming an experienced discount traveler is to learn about airline hubs and patterns, and to explore taking to separate flights as opposed to one long one when traveling internationally.

How to Ensure Your Las Vegas Vacation is Full of Adventure and Kicks

How to Ensure Your Las Vegas Vacation is Full of Adventure and Kicks
By: http://northamericabase.com/
Las Vegas was for a long time the adults playground. Las Vegas was and is the gambling and drinking capitol of the world, and it was just about as Wild West as you could get in the twentieth century. But in the last 20 years Las Vegas has changed into a large amusement park for the whole family. There is such a wide variety of things to do inside and outside of Las Vegas apart from gambling, that it would be a shame to pass up the opportunity to see some of the beautiful sites around the area.

1) Think location. A hotel that is located directly on the strip will end up being much higher in price than a hotel just off the strip. Really, glamour is nice, but saving a couple of extra hundred dollars in the long run will allow you the opportunity to do some great things that had not been originally accounted for.

2) Outside of Las Vegas are some very nice deserts and mountains. Easy to get to and very close, it is nice to take a break from the gambling and partying to get out and visit a bit of nature. Finding a hotel that is close to the Strip but also close to all the nature reserves is a big bonus when you are not having a good time at the casino tables.

3) Las Vegas is huge, and continues to grow, so trying to visit an amusement park on the outskirts from the Strip, may tend to be a bit difficult, so try to aim to be a little farther from all the traffic if you are not just gambling and are doing other fun things.

4) When searching for a place to stay in Las Vegas, you will find that in just about any direction there will be hotels in which to stay, offering a drive of less than 10 minutes to the Strip plus there is free parking at most casinos on the Strip for when you are going to gamble.

5) Think Entertainment! Check out the available shows during the time you are in Vegas. If you are lucky, you might get to see some of the greatest entertainers such as Jay Leno, Edwin Murphy, Sting, Bon Jovi, Celine Dion, Jeniffer Lopez, Shakira, Madonna and many many more for just a few dollars. Sometimes, you might get a ticket dirt-cheap if you only look around and ask. Since Vegas is relatively small, its worth your while to check out not just the shows that your hotel (however grand it is!) is planning for its customers, but also to check out those offered by the rest of the hotels in Las Vegas.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when traveling to Las Vegas. If you are traveling with the family, you will want to remember that Las Vegas and Nevada offer excellent hotels and casinos as well as some of the most undisturbed wildlife and nature reserves and fantastic camping in the area.

If you wish to find out more about the casinos in Las Vegas or the entertainment and different adventures you could take part in, go to http://www.gambling-portal.com for detailed reviews, explanations and hot tips.

These Christmas activities can be great for young children. Giant Christmas trees are erected throughout the parks and lit up with thousands of Christmas lights, bringing the spirit of Christmas alive throughout the already magical Disney World. The weeks around the Christmas season are also times where lodging rates at Disney World resorts are typically lower than the peak season rates.

By traveling during the Christmas season you are likely to get tons of fun at a reduced price. The weather in central Florida during the Christmas season is typically in the mid-70s, a great change of pace if you are used to cold, wintry Christmas seasons. Santa’s sleigh may have some trouble landing without snow but the magic of the Christmas season is alive and well at Disney World.

How to Save Money and Time for Your Air Travel

How to Save Money and Time for Your Air Travel
By: http://northamericabase.com
Are you preparing for a trip that requires air travel? If you are, you may want to take the time to familiarize yourself with a few helpful tips. Some of these tips are outlined below for you and, when properly implemented, they may be able to save you both time and money.

Before leaving for the airport, as well as before packing your bags, be sure to familiarize yourself with airport security rules and restrictions. If you keep a close eye on the news, you may already know most of the rules, but you may still want to visit the online website for the TSA before leaving. This will result in you making it through airport security a lot quicker. Also, when you pack your bags based on existing rules, you are less likely to have to throw away any prohibited items, which can cost you money.

When packing your bags, be sure to pack with care. This is extremely important with your checked baggage. If you will have liquids in your checked bags, like shampoo or lotion, be sure to wrap them in a plastic grocery bag. This will be a lifesaver if anything spills or breaks open. If packing items these items in a carry-on bag, make sure that you are following all rules. For example, only small travel sizes are allowed and you are required to keep them separated in a plastic ziplock bag.

In keeping with packing your bags, be sure to keep anything of great value or importance in your carry-on bag. Laptops, digital cameras, and camcorders should not go into checked luggage, as the chances of damage are quite high. You never want to be separated from something that is valuable. Be sure to keep your carry-on bag with you at all times, never leave your bag unattended at the airport.

Speaking of the airport, be sure to arrive early for your flight. Generally speaking, you are asked to arrive about an hour and half to two hours before your flight is set to depart; however, you may want to do a little bit of research first. Most airports will outline on their websites how early you should arrive. Those larger in size may recommend arriving two hours or more early. It never hurts to be early for your flight, even too early. Always remember that you never know with wait times, especially where airport security is involved. Always arrive earlier than normal on weekends or holidays, as they are usually busy travel times.

Buy all snacks that you may want or need to eat ahead of time, not at the airport. As for drinks, you will want to buy them at the airport though. Unless a drink is for a child, chances are it will not make it past airport security checkpoints, but dry snacks will. Buying dry snacks and candy ahead of time can prevent you from having to pay outrageous prices at the airport. If your flight leaves during breakfast, lunch, or dinner time, try to eat a full meal before you arrive at the airport, as this can also save you a considerable amount of money.

When buying your airport tickets, be sure to give yourself enough time at layovers. Generally speaking, fifteen to twenty minutes or less isn’t a good idea. Most flights can average a ten minute delay. Yes, if you miss a connecting flight, you will be provided with other arrangements, but these alternative arrangements can through a wrench in the rest of your travel plans.

If you will be traveling with young children, you will want to arrive at the airport even earlier. This will give you the opportunity to teach your child about the airport security screening process or even watch others go through, so that your child will not be scared. For children just learning how to walk, strollers are a good idea, as they allow you to quickly move around airports, especially during short layovers.

Air Travel Tips for Parents with Teens

Air Travel Tips for Parents with Teens

http://www.northamericabase.com
Are you the parent of a teenager? If you are, are you in the process of planning a trip that requires air travel? If so, you may be looking for tips that can help you and you family have a nice and pleasant flight.

When traveling with a teenager, you will find that you are very lucky. This is due in part to your child’s age. Teenagers are likely to be more pleasant and cooperative on flights, especially when compared to toddlers and preschoolers. Still, you may be looking for some extra tips, just in case.

One of the first things that you will want to do is teach your child the importance of watching what is said at the airport. With security concerns, it is not uncommon for travelers to be detained for a closer look, even just when joking. Many teens do like to joke around, so be sure to let your teen know the danger of doing so. Make sure that they know not to repeat certain words in an airport, such as knife, gun, bomb, or terrorist. Your teenager may already know this important piece of information, bt there is no harm in providing a quick reminder.

If you let your child pack their own bags for your trip, be sure to give them a quick look over. The checking of your teen’s carry-on luggage is extremely important. Does your child have anything in their carry-on bag that may result your family being stopped at an airport security checkpoint? As for checked baggage, make sure that your child’s bags are not overfilled. Also, make sure that they don’t put anything of great value or importance, like a digital camera or a laptop computer, in a checked bag, as damage can occur.

You will also want to make sure that your child has a drink or snack for the trip. This is particularly ideal for short flights or picky eaters and drinkers. Although many dry snacks, like chips, are okay to pickup before arriving at the airport, drinks are another story. Due to a limit on liquids, have your child get a soda, water, or juice at an airport store, namely one that is positioned after you have passed through all needed security checkpoints. This approach may cost more money, but the end result is much less hassle.

Since all passengers are allowed a carry-on bag, you will want to make sure that your child brings things that interest them. For example, books and magazines are cheap ways to keep teens occupied on an airplane ride. Extra items that are perfect for teens include handheld video gaming consoles, DVD players, and MP3 players. There are some locations in the United States where you can rent these items if you or your teen doesn’t already own them. When using anything electronic, be sure to bring a few extra batteries and keep them in your purse or in a carry-on bag.

As highlighted above, there are a number of steps that you, as a parent, can take to ensure that your next family flight is pleasant for you and your teenager. Although teenagers are more likely to be pleasant and cooperative, the above mentioned points can still provide you with much needed assistance, as well as comfort and peace of mind.

Travel Tips For People With Crohn's Disease

Travel Tips For People With Crohn's Disease
By: http://northamericabase.com/

Although Crohn’s Disease is a difficult disorder, you should not keep yourself from living the best life possible because you suffer from this disorder. You should continue in your life as you would without Crohn’s, although a few more precautions may be necessary. When traveling, this will ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

The first thing you should do, whether you are traveling abroad or close to home, is locate a doctor in the area you will be visiting. There are several organizations available to utilize in your search or you can simply ask your doctor for referrals.

If you are taking prescription medication, you should be sure to take plenty for the duration of your trip. You should also keep it with you when you travel on the plane to avoid it being lost in the heaps of luggage. Always keep your medication in its original container and a typed statement from your doctor regarding what medications you are taking and what they are for. You will also need to get copies of all of your prescriptions, including foreign names, in case you have to refill them abroad. However, you should avoid this by carrying enough medication with you, as filling prescriptions in other counties can sometimes be difficult.

A common ailment among travelers to less developed countries is known as “traveler’s diarrhea”. This can be especially dangerous for sufferers of Crohn’s Disease and special care should be taken to avoid it from occurring. Basically, traveler’s diarrhea occurs from the ingestion of water or food that is not as stringently processed as in the United States. Steps that should be taken include being very careful about what you eat or drink; do not drink water unless you boil it; avoid drinks made from tap water, like tea or juices that may have been mixed from concentrate; use bottled water to drink and to brush your teeth with; avoid ice, ice cream, and uncooked fruits, vegetables, and meat; avoid diary products as they may not be pasteurized; and do not eat any questionable food. If you become affected with traveler’s diarrhea, take an over the counter medication and be sure to intake plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Also watch for signs of a medical emergency, such as high fever or chills, which may be a sign of infection; profuse rectal bleeding; extreme abdominal pain; dizziness; or dehydration. If any of these occur, seek medical attention immediately.

How To Travel With Your Dog

How To Travel With Your Dog
By: http://www.northamericabase.com/

It happens every year. Millions of vacationing and moving families face the question of "what to do about their pet." If on vacation, should you take him or leave him? As a member of the family, your pet is entitled to share the fun of travelling. On the other hand, some pets can take all the pleasure out of a trip. Think before you decide. A week or two in a clean, well-run boarding kennel might be your dog's idea of a perfect vacation!

A dog should be thoroughly familiar with riding in a car before you consider taking him on a long trip. After a few rides around town most dogs overcome their motion sickness and begin to enjoy riding with the family. If you pet does not travel well and continues to get sick or restless, consider a boarding kennel. Don't take a sick or unhappy dog on a trip. Both you and your pets will be miserable.

But suppose you decide to take him along. Keep in mind these important tips when travelling with your dog:

Be sure to make your hotel reservations well in advance, advising that you will have a dog with you. This could save much time and aggravation. Automobile clubs and hotel/motel guides often list facilities that accept dogs.

Take along your pet's own bowl. Use it for water and mixing his food. He will have an added feeling of security using his regular bowl. Try not to feed your pet for six or more hours prior to traveling. Most dogs travel better on this feeding schedule. Also take along a square of old blanket or his sleeping pad. This is your dog's travel bed in the car and motel. After you've shown him a few times, he'll understand.

You dog should wear two collars: One light chain-choke collar and a leather collar, rolled or flat. Put an identification tag on one and your local dog license on the other. Even if one collar is lost, he could be identified with the other.

A can of flea powder is a must. Your pet may start out without a single flea, but he could pick some up along the way. You don't want fleas in your car, and the hotel or motel doesn't want them either.

Some dogs insist on hanging their heads out the window. Don't permit this, as bits of grit may be driven into the eyes. In any case, the dog may get nasal and eye passage inflammation just from the wind. Keep him in his place and close the windows part way to discourage him.

If you will be traveling between several states or provinces, check with your veterinarian or humane society to find whether health certificates and proof of rabies vaccination are required. Most states and provinces require some form of health certificate.

Wherever you go, remember that you are responsible for your dog's conduct. The impression you make on hotel and motel managers will determine their attitude toward all dogs and dog owners. By planning ahead and observing the rules of courtesy, you can take your dog with you anywhere. If your pet enjoys car travel, you and your family can a expect a most enjoyable trip.

Air Travel Tips for Families

Air Travel Tips for Families
By: http://www.northamericabase.com/
Are you interested in taking a family vacation soon? If you are, you may be looking for some guidance, especially if you and your family will be required to travel by airplane. As stressful as it can sometimes be planning a trip and flying with a family, especially one that is large in size, there are a number of steps that can be taken to ensure that everyone has a fun and pleasant time.

One of the first things that you will want to do, when looking to plan a family vacation, is to make your airline reservations early. You will likely be better off when doing so, for a number of different reasons. Perhaps, the greatest reason is the comfort and peace of mind that you may get from knowing that all of your travel arrangements are made and out of the way.

As for packing for your flight, you will want to make sure that your children’s bag are packed and properly. Not only will you want to make sure that they have all needed supplies for your vacation, but you will also want to make sure that they have items for the airplane ride as well. Each person gets to have one carry-on bag. You will want to make sure that each of your kids have one.

Speaking of carry-on bags for your children, be sure to fill them will fun activities for the plane ride. What you will choose will all depend on your child’s age. For example, younger children may benefit from books and a few small toys. For older children, portable DVD players, handheld video games, toys, and magazines are a great idea.

You will also want to make sure that you have extra snacks on hand and in your carry-on bags. This is important, as you don’t want to have to spend too much money at the airport. It can get costly to feed a whole family, even just with snacks. For that same reason, try to have everyone eat a full meal before you leave for the airport. This step combined with snacks can help to reduce hunger, possibly resulting in shared meals during airport layovers, which can also help you save money.

As for drinks, do not bring any with you to the airport, unless you have a newborn or an infant. If you have a baby, bring one prepared bottle of formula, but make sure to have some dry formula powder with you to prepare during a layover. Drinks, with the exception of drinks for kids, are not allowed past airport security checkpoints and they will have to be thrown away. When buying drinks at an airport store, past security, look for items that are reasonably priced or see if some family members, like you and your spouse, can share a drink.

As for when you arrive at the airport, be sure to stay together. Also, be sure to set ground rules with your children. These rules should include sticking together, not speaking to strangers, and so forth. In fact, you will want to help each other out. For example, if you have an older child, like a teenager, let them help you with finding the right gate, carrying bags, or keeping any younger children occupied. Your trip will likely be much less stressful when everyone works together.

This is not unusual in today's modern times and if you do decide to study abroad, you should never forget to get a student travel insurance.

Studying abroad can change a student's life drastically. The whole experience may be intimidating to you as a student but if you have student travel insurance, some of your concerns are eased. You can be sure that things like emergencies and hospital costs will not bother you.

There are different types of insurance policies and a student travel insurance is just one of them. It protects you as you study abroad and while you're away from the comforts of your home. Some student insurance policies differ in the coverage but oftentimes it includes the following – health and accident benefits, medical evacuation, lost luggage, travel delay or interruption, stolen money, and many others. You need to determine the ones you want covered in the insurance so you need to look into each policy that comes your way. Compare the coverage and benefits as well as the exclusions. The price of the policy is not a major consideration however, if you have budgetary constraints, you can choose a cheap policy that offers most of your coverage needs.

When was the last time you employer gave you a break? I’m not talking about a trip to some tropical resort or other international location. What I am talking about is a mini vacation. These can be an important way to build sanity back into a busy day, week, month or year.

Take Tim for example. His company flies him to many locations as part of his job. He is gone from home more than five months each year. His company allows him to retain all the reward points on his company credit card, so he can take his family on trips. This is their way of thanking Tim for his hard work.

When Tim is at these distance centers installing networks for his company he has developed a passion for the mini-vacation. For Tim this means loading a camera bag into the rental car and traveling to a pre-determined local destination and taking dozens of photographs.

He indicates that being away from his family would be absolutely unbearable if it weren’t for the hobby he can enjoy on these mini-vacations. Early in the morning or after an install, Tim might be headed to a beach, a lighthouse or a mountaintop to capture images from across the U.S. Tim’s photo artwork now graces his home and office. Folks are even beginning to ask him for reprints.

As his skill and passion for photography increases so too does his passion for the mini-vacation. Tim realizes that work could consume him, but finding someplace to go and being able to concentrate on something other than work allows him to be a better team member and it allows him to anticipate going home to see his family when his work is done.

Prior to his discovery of the mini-vacation Tim regularly found himself resigned to his motel room with either a computer or television. To him this was neither relaxing nor refreshing. It only served to remind him of work yet to do and a family waiting for him.

You might view a mini-vacation as something as simple as a trip to a nearby coffee shop to drink a latte and read a chapter or two in a favorite book. It might mean a trip to a nearby park for jogging, Frisbee or a hike on a nature trail.

Some businesses are allowing these mini-vacations or even power naps to enable their team members to find a balance between work and personal interests. I think what interests most team leaders is that this approach can often mean increased productivity.

It may seem as though this would be an impossibility, but in an age when job satisfaction is at an unusual low the idea of allowing team members to pursue their own interests in a flexible way can allow those team members to gain an improved outlook on job satisfaction. It may likely allow those same employees to deliver an improved job performance when they understand the company really does care about the things they are most interested in.

For Tim it’s photography. What would you do on your mini vacation?

Of ‘Meese’ and Maple Leaves

Of ‘Meese’ and Maple Leaves
Because of Canada’s proximity to the United States and its similarities to its neighbor, it ranks number 2 out of the top 10 major destinations for an education abroad.

By: http://www.northamericabase.com

“The US is our trading partner, our neighbor, our ally and our friend… and sometimes we’d like to give them such a smack!”
- Rick Mercer

Because of Canada’s proximity to the United States and its similarities to its neighbor, it ranks number 2 out of the top 10 major destinations for an education abroad.

And just like the good ol’ red-white-and-blue, this red maple leaf has several requirements in order for you to study in its academic institutions - or at the very least, be allowed to risk riding a barrel down the Niagara Falls.

First of all, to be allowed to study in a Canadian institution, one must have a student authorization/permit.

Issued by an immigration officer, the said authorization simply means that you are allowed to remain in Canada to take an academic, professional or vocational training course at an approved university, college or other institution.

(* taken from the international education site)

What are the basic requirements for student authorization?

You must satisfy the visa officer that you meet the requirements of the Canadian Immigration Act and Regulations and that you will be in Canada for a temporary stay.

You must also:

· satisfy a visa officer that you will be able to return to your country or be admitted to another country after your studies;

· have been unconditionally accepted by an approved educational institution;

· proof that you have enough money during your stay in Canada to pay for:

- tuition fees;
- living expenses for yourself and accompanying dependants; and
- return transportation for yourself and accompanying dependants;

· be law abiding and have no record of criminal activity (you may be asked to provide a Police Clearance Certificate);

· not be a risk to the security of Canada;

· produce any additional documents requested by the visa officer to establish your admissibility;
· complete a medical examination, if required; and

· pay the fee.

~*~

When should I apply?

The time required to process an application to study in Canada may vary at different visa offices. You should apply as early as possible, and allow at least six months to plan and prepare for your move.

Note: Canadian universities suggest you apply for admission at least one year in advance of your planned arrival.

~*~

How do I apply for a student authorization?

Complete the application form, and include the fee and the documents listed below.

To complete your application you will need to know the cost of your education including tuition fees and books, medical insurance, return transportation costs and living costs for yourself and any dependants while in Canada. Living costs vary in each province.

~*~

What documents are required?

You are required to provide the following documents for yourself and any accompanying dependants:

1. Proof of acceptance

· for attendance at a university, college or technical institution, a letter from the educational institution to show:

- the name of the institution;
- confirmation of your acceptance and/or registration as a student;
- the course of study;
- the duration of the academic program; and
- the latest date you may register.

· for attendance at a primary or secondary school, a letter from the school board having jurisdiction for the school you are attending (or for private schools, a letter from the school itself), indicating:

- the name of the school;
- the level of study; and
- the duration of the course.

For attendance at an educational institution in Quebec, you will also require a “Certificat d’acceptation du Québec” (Quebec Certificate of Acceptance, or CAQ) issued by the Ministère des Relations avec les citoyens et de l’Immigration (MRCI)

2. Proof of identity

· a valid passport or travel document or identity document that guarantees re-entry to the country that issued it (citizens and permanent residents of the United States, St. Pierre and Miquelon, and Greenland do not require a passport but do require proof of status such as a national identity card or an alien registration card); and

· two recent passport size photos for each family member (the name and date of birth of the person should be written on the back of each photo).

3. Proof of financial support

· evidence that you can support yourself and accompanying dependants while you study in Canada. Such evidence may include:

- proof of a Canadian bank account in your name if money has been transferred to Canada;
- your bank statements for the past four months;
- a bank draft in convertible currency;
- proof of payment of tuition and residence fees;
- for those with a scholarship or those with a Canadian funded educational program:
proof of funding paid from within Canada;

· if foreign exchange control measures exist in your country, you must provide proof that you will be permitted by the exchange control authorities of your country to export funds for all of your expenses; and

· if additional documents are required, a visa officer will inform you.

Note: Children under 16 years of age who are travelling alone must have information (name, address, phone number) about the person or school who will be responsible for them. If the child is the subject of a custody order, proof of custody and the other parent’s consent must also be provided. Minors travelling without their parents require a letter of permission from the non-accompanying parent(s).

But, if you’re a student, wallowing in your tough, pressure-cooker-like studies and long lists of student debts, is there a way you could actually earn your keep and continue on with your scholastic pursuits?

Sit back and relax, while I fry up the next post on how to bring home the ‘Canadian’ bacon while holding a student permit.
